We are happy to see you are interested in becoming a volleyball official for the Corpus Christi Area Chapter. We are currently accepting membership applications for the 2025 season. First some general information about our chapter and membership.
Who can be a volleyball official?
Anyone who is 16 years of age or older at the start of the season and is physically able to perform all the duties required of a volleyball official. No prior knowledge of the sport is necessary although it does help. You MUST have reliable transportation.
What is my cost to join the chapter and be prepared to call matches?
To become a member a new applicant must register online at TASO.org and select Corpus Christi Area Chapter for the chapter you wish to be assigned to. Membership in TASO for a brand new official is currently $115. This fee is for membership, insurance, rule books, and access to a mandatory Rules Clinic you must attend/complete.
To join our local chapter, fees of $50 must be paid (first year officials rate) and submitted with your local application.
A uniform must be purchased which includes an official uniform top that must be purchased through an authorized vendor. In addition, black slacks, black athletic shoes, a whistle, and other equipment is necessary. The typical cost for a complete uniform and equipment is around $100.
The good news is you can offset this expense by just calling a few matches.
What other requirements do I need to know about?
You will be required to attend specific training, take a state test (online, open-book) and pass with a minimum score of 70. You will be required to attend meetings prior and during the season. You will be required to follow the Governing Documents (Bylaws, Policies, etc.) of TASO and CCAC. Members MUST be available after 4:00 pm on Tuesdays and Fridays (Varsity nights).
How much do officials get paid?
How much you make in a days work varies depending on level of play and how many matches are scheduled for you to call. Typical schedules for the day can be:
A Freshman match, followed by a Junior Varsity match, followed by a Varsity match. The fees are $50, $50, and $70 ($50 for each sub-varsity and $70 for Varsity) for a total of $170. Plus an additional mileage fee, usually $20.
A Freshman match, and a Varsity match as a line judge The fees are $50 and $55 plus mileage.
Typically a referee receives $70 for Varsity matches, $50 for Sub-Varsity and $45 for Middle School matches.
When are the matches and how often would I be required to call matches?
The volleyball season begins the first week of August to the middle of November. Matches normally start between 4:30pm and 5:30pm. Most matches are played on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. There will be a few matches on Wednesday and Saturday. No matches are scheduled for Sunday.
Your assignments will be a reflection of your availability, skill set, experience, location and scratches. Also you have the ability to block out days you do not want to have games assigned to you.
So how many games (matches) will I get assigned?
While there is no guarantee of getting any matches, there is usually enough to go around. The Corpus Christi Area Chapter assigns its matches using many criteria. You must be available to reach your match site 30 minutes prior to the start of the first match. You must have the skill set for the level of play for your matches. You must not be on the school's scratch list or your partners scratch list. You must have passed all the certification criteria by their deadlines. You must have the proper uniform and equipment. You must have reliable transportation. You must have a good work ethic and be able to go 5+ hours while on your feet. And your judgment must be at a high level. Most of all you must follow the rules and policies of being a Volleyball Referee and be a upstanding leader for the support of the game.
